Renowned sociologist, Dr.Spano has served as the director of the Riza Institute of Psychosomatic Medicine, and of the School of Psychotherapy's Department of Psychosomatics. He was the 20-year head of the Department of Psychotherapy at the European University Jean Monnet in Brussels, where he also founded a Department of Natural Medicine, and Departments of Criminology and Clinical Criminology. He has been on the staff of Italy's Surgeon General as an expert consultant on street drug use, and in most recent years heads a national focus group called “Local Democracy” aimed at analyzing economic, political, and cultural systems, in the interest of improving the state of society. He is standing president of Italy's National Educational Organization (ONF) for the specialties of health and social issues, and leader of a chapter of Italy's SIMP—Italian Society for Psychosomatic Medicine. His numerous professional publications include books, contributions, and articles on social issues in educational environments, psychology, medicine, socio-political trends, sexuality in the disabled community, labor and childbirth, psychophysical phenomena, mind-body study, criminology, childhood formative and health issues, the street-drug epidemic, mental health care in the public health system, globalization, virtual reality, and issues affecting adolescents.
